Intro, Ch. 7, 8, &10

In the introduction we are introduced to the term third wave civilization. This concept is referred to as blended and it mixes the old and new ways of civilization to create a new type of civilization. The quality that makes the civilizations is its uniqueness. Each state or cities is becoming specialized and growing individually because of its resources, technology and the ability to trade. The one thing I noted was that as the new traditions begin to form, the trend of "history repeating itself" also emerges. "Variations on this theme of continuing or renewing older traditions took shape in the Western Hemisphere, where two centers of civilization -in The Meso-America and in the Andes - had long been established". Again, it was an era when old and new  borrowed ideas and innovations in order to thrive. Trade was the the thread that held the states together. People traveled further than they ever had before and they interacted with other civilizations. Trade w...

Chapters 3-6

In chapter three the beginning of stereotypes and the role of gender begins to take shape in a historical perspective. In Rome, being a warrior was glorified. Men who were strong and  had money were glorified. They were allowed to shift their power from the military to their home life. In private, the man was able dominate his home life. He had total control over his wife, children and his slaves. The total domination was so extreme, he was able to kill them if he choose to, and the state would not intervene. The women would support their men by producing sons and teach them "warrior " values. The only exception to this mentality was for Upper-Class Roman women. These affluent women had almost total control of their property and marital status. This demonstrates early on the roles of women and men and the gender biases we see in today's society.      As both Rome and China empires had been established there were many similarities between two plac...

Prologue, Chapter 1 & 2

Prologue:   As I was reading through the Prologue I found the reading to be very relevant to some of  today's environmental issue that we are facing in current times. In the book, written by Strayer, it states that there was a "Permian mass extinction around 250 million years ago and eliminated some 96%of living species on the planet". Natural disasters such as, a volcanic eruption and release of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere were contributing factors to the mass destruction. The book referred to this as global warming. When I read the words global warming and volcanoes, bells went off in my head. Today, there is an active volcano in Hawaii erupting and we are in a constant struggle dealing with the effects of global warming. Our planet and our oceans are being effected by the green house gas effect. It makes me wonder, will something this catastrophic happen again? Are humans to ignorant or self-absorbed to take note of the history? Granted, some of the...
